My Body in Pieces (2021)

In this autobiographical work, images of the artist’s body are inserted into photographs from a family archive of male bodybuilders. Most of the photographs depict Mumbai in the 1960s: the photographs depict the artist’s family members posing and flexing their muscles for the camera, revealing the birth of the body politic in India. In response, the artist inserts her own limbs into these historical photographs, draping them with silk fabric that suggests another surface or skin to the image.

My Body in Pieces was commissioned by Sydney College of the Arts and UTS Gallery for the exhibition, The Other Portrait, curated by Julie Rrap and Cherine Fahd in 2021. The work was shown in the National Photography Prize exhibition at Murray Art Museum, Albury, 2021 and received the John and Margaret Baker Fellowship, National Photography Prize.
